PULASKI, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee System has lost an estimated $37.7 million in federal funding following the termination of 42 grant awards. The majority of the cuts, approximately $31.2 million, impact the UT Institute of Agriculture, which plays a vital role in agricultural research and statewide education efforts that benefit farmers and communities in all 95 Tennessee counties.
Overall, the UT System had been awarded more than $59 million in federal grant funding from various agencies. However, $51.4 million of that total is now subject to cuts, and the $37.7 million in unspent funds will not be disbursed.
In addition to the UT Institute of Agriculture, several other UT campuses and programs are affected:
UT Knoxville: Loss of $2.1 million
UT Health Science Center: Loss of $2.6 million
UT Chattanooga: Loss of $1.4 million
UT Institute for Public Service: Loss of $419,107
The full scope of the long-term impact on research projects, community outreach programs, and agricultural support services remains to be seen, but university officials are expected to address the funding gap and its implications in the coming weeks.
