PULASKI, Tenn. - Local and state agricultural leaders gathered in Giles County this morning for the Ag Impact Breakfast, a powerful event that spotlighted the critical role agriculture plays in Tennessee’s economy, and the growing challenges it faces.
Mike Mayfield, State Executive Director for the USDA Farm Service Agency in Tennessee, delivered a keynote address packed with data that hit close to home. Tennessee currently ranks 12th in the nation for beef production, and Giles County stands out as 3rd in the state. In addition, the county leads Tennessee in emergency livestock relief participation, reflecting the strength and resilience of the local ag community.
But perhaps the most startling statistic shared was this: Tennessee is losing 10 acres of farmland every hour.
Mayfield’s message was clear, agriculture isn’t just a part of Tennessee’s past, it’s vital to its future. Leaders are urging the community to support local producers, invest in farmland preservation, and advocate for policies that protect the industry for the next generation.
