Lawrenceburg Community Theater presents the historic musical "The Gentleman From the Cane" in July at the historic Crockett Theater in downtown Lawrenceburg.
The show was first produced in 1976 to celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial and was written by local educator and dramatist Dolly Leighton.
The musical drama portrays David Crockett's time living in Lawrence County, Tennessee from 1818 to 1822 and is drawn from county historical records and Crockett's autobiography, interwoven with the music, folklore and daily life of the period.
Originally staged along the banks of Shoal Creek in David Crockett State Park, the production went on to inaugurate the park's amphitheater in 1981, drawing over 6,000 attendees during its initial two week run. The production continues to be a cherished community tradition featuring a cast of local volunteer performers honoring the rich history of Lawrence County.
In celebration of its 50th Anniversary and as part of the commemoration of America's 250th Anniversary, performances of "The Gentleman From the Cane" will be held at the Crockett Theater July 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 a@ 7pm and a matinee at 2:00pm July 12.
