Kratom Law Goes Into Effect (7/1)

The Tennessee bill prohibiting the possession, manufacture, sale, and delivery of kratom has been signed into law by the Governor and will take effect July 1st, 2026. 

Known as Matthew’s Law, it amends earlier legislation, here's what you need to know:

Possession of kratom is a Class A misdemeanor.
Manufacturing, delivering, or selling kratom is a Class C felony.
Delivering or selling kratom to a minor is a Class B felony.

Kratom has often been referred to as “gas station heroin” due to its opioid-like effects. Its use can result in serious health risks, including respiratory depression (slowed or stopped breathing), addiction, and physical dependence. Regular use may lead to increased tolerance, requiring larger amounts to achieve the same effects, and can cause severe withdrawal symptoms such as body aches, cold sweats, nausea, irritability, and insomnia.

Residents are encouraged to be aware of these changes and the legal consequences associated with possessing, selling, or distributing kratom after July 1, 2026.
