This week is National Safe Boating Week and the U.S. Coast Guard offers some safety tips as we enter the 2026 boating season.
Wear a life jacket. Each year, approximately 75% of boating deaths are due to drowning and 87% of those weren't wearing life jackets. Accidents on the water happen too fast to reach and put on a stowed life jacket.
Check the weather prior to boating and plan accordingly.
Take a boater safety course to gain the knowledge and skills needed to safely operate your boat.
Always let a friend or family member know when you will be on the water, including your planned destination, estimated departure and arrival times.
And never boat under the influence. Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents.
