The Metro Nashville Police Department said five people died when a plane crashed on the side of Interstate 40 in West Nashville.

The crash took place between the Nashville West Shopping Center near Costco and the interstate.

Police said the FAA and NTSB would be leading the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Officials said the pilot of the plane requested an emergency landing at John Tune Airport saying they were experiencing engine problems. Police said everyone on the plane died.

Officials said evidence from the scene was recovered to help with the investigation.

There were no vehicles or buildings hit when the plane crashed.
