The new city ordinance past this week in Lawrenceburg is sparking debate.

Residents can now be fined for having indoor furniture, outdoors and the ordinance is stirring up people on both sides.

According to reports, the intention behind the ordinance is to make Lawrenceburg more livable. The city told media they will not be patrolling streets looking for couches sitting outside. Rather, they are targeting homes with eyesores who are creating bigger issues for their neighbors.

A city official reported they are mostly looking for furniture that’s wet, soggy, or collecting bugs. They are also focusing on repair shops with too many broken down cars, as well as abandoned houses.

A person that moved into the city of  recently said there are some trouble areas where houses having refrigerators and a washing machine in the yard or porch.

However, some people have said they want the city out of their front yard.

Several citizens say the city does not have a right to tell a person what you can have on your front porch, or can’t have on your front porch.

The fine is $50.00, and city will charge a person every day until all items are cleared.

The city says once a person is warned they give approximately a  week to clean it up.
