Giles County Executive Melissa Greene announced plans are underway to rename the Giles County Dog Pound as a shelter.

Greene made the announcement during a recent meeting of the Public Service Committee.

The plan would include hiring an animal officer and a shelter manager. Tentative salary and benefits were estimated at $47,174 for the animal control officer and $42,000 for the shelter manager.

The animal control officer would be hired by the Giles County Sheriff's Department.

Greene said next step would be to figure out ways to pay for her proposed plan.

The City of Pulaski will be approached about helping financially with the shelter.

According to Linda Vanzant, a member of the Giles County Humane Association, the group will work with the city and county and were pleased with suggestion and progress in dealing with the issue of a shelter.

The pound was closed in October 2018 following an investigation into the operation by 22nd Judicial District Attorney General Brent Cooper's office.
