Schools in Giles County were closed Friday due to illness throughout the school system.

Giles County School Superintendent Phillip Wright could not be reached for specific details on how many students and teachers have fallen ill, but one doctor told WKSR that closing schools might be the right way to go.

According to a local doctor, the tricky thing about the flu is that you can be contagious even before you start to show symptoms  and then you can be contagious for up to a week, so closing schools can help contain the virus .

School officials continue to monitor teacher and student absentee rates.  Decision on Monday school openings have not been announced.

Other schools closed in the area due to illness were Maury and Fayetteville City Schools.
