Beer Ordinance Change Tabled at Mayor and Aldermen Meeting Posted on February 26, 2013
Several concerned citizens spoke out against the proposed beer ordinance change at today’s meeting of the Pulaski Board of Mayor and Aldermen. Ritchie Rose, who would like to build a convenience store on the old Bennett-May property, had asked for the opinion of First Presbyterian Church, the church closest to his proposed business, what their thoughts were. In addition to the several people, including the pastor, who spoke out against it at the meeting, Mayor Pat Ford read a letter from the congregation which said that they had voted against it 62-4.
The site’s real estate agent told the board that a larger business would not fit on the site, so they’re limited as to what kind of business can buy it. Both he and several members of the board expressed concern that a more objectionable business could move onto the site and that there would be nothing they could do about it.
Rose addressed the concerns of those present, stating his respect for everyone the ordinance change would effect. He said that he had tried to do everything openly and honestly. He then asked the board to table the motion. Although there had been concern about how traffic would be in the area, Rose told WKSR he chose that site because of the amount of traffic in the area. He said that he is looking at other sites for his business as well and if the board does eventually change the ordinance, the Bennett-May building is his first choice.
The board then discussed the fact that they wanted to be able to consider the ordinance as an ordinance, not just in regard to one business or church. Ultimately, the board voted to table the ordinance change.
