Proposed Change for Bennett-May Building and the Law Posted on February 04, 2013
The first item of business at yesterday’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting was to hear from Ritchie Rose. Rose is the owner of Richland Trace Market and he has plans to purchase the old Bennett-May Building and turn it into a convenience store. He wants to bring the kind of food that he serves at Richland Trace Market to the downtown area. Rose said that this store will be unlike anything Pulaski already has.
Although the main focus of this store will be food, he also plans to have package beer sales. In order to do this, however, the board will have to change the law. As it stands now, Pulaski does not allow the sale of beer, for on or off premises consumption, within 200 feet of a church, school, hospital, or nursing home. The 200 feet is calculated by measuring the nearest point on that building to the nearest point of the other building. Because the Bennett-May building is within 200 feet of First Presbyterian Church, Rose would like to see that law changed to what Lawrenceburg and Columbia have, which is to 200 feet from the front door of the building to the front door of the other building. If the law is changed, then this proposed new convenience store would then be 287 feet from the church.
Rose said that he has not heard anything negative from the church about this proposed change. He said that if he does, then he won’t fight it and the project will be cancelled.
