Election Commission Inspects New Registrations Posted on January 17, 2013
The Giles County Election Commission met this afternoon to inspect new voter registrations. A law was passed in 2010 mandating that the election commissioners inspect each new voter registration.
According to Administrator of Elections Kathy Bassham, one of the most common mistakes on new registrations is that, after checking yes many times, some people mistakenly mark that they have been convicted of a felony. In Tennessee, most convicted felons are not permitted to vote. Bassham says she always follows up to make sure the person did not make a mistake.
Although many of the registrations were new, many of them were people who had been inactive voters and had been purged from the system.
The commission approved approximately 200 registrations.
