School Board Meets, Talks School Excellence, Safety

The Giles County School Board met last night to discuss, among other things, school recognition and school safety.
The board voted to approve, on second reading School Board Policy #6.205, which addresses student assignment. They also approved, on first reading, School Board Policy #1.802 Section 504 and ADA Grievance Procedures, which would help put a system for grievances in place.
It was also announced that Richland Elementary School has been awarded several honors due to their promotion of a healthy environment. They are one of sixteen schools in the nation to received a Gold Award of Distinction. Although a ceremony has not yet been scheduled, a representative from the USDA will be on hand to present the award. They were also one of two schools in the state recognized as a school of excellence. According to Ann Chaffin, now that one school has been recognized for excellence, her next goal is for three Giles County schools to receive similar honors.
Giles County Commissioner Tommy Pollard addressed and answered questions from the board ahead of next Tuesday’s round table discussion on school safety. Although no one seemed opposed to having an SRO in every school, there were questions from the board as to how this would be paid for, as well as would that be doing enough. According to Pollard, the cost for employing these six officers and outfitting them with equipment would be $400,000 and, since the state legislature has only just convened this week, there is no word yet as to how much money the state would contribute. Everyone was encouraged to attend next Tuesday’s round table discussion at 11:30 a.m. in the basement boardroom of the courthouse annex.
The board also scheduled a work session for Tuesday, January 29, at 5:00 p.m. in addition to their next regularly monthly meeting, which will be February 14 at 5:00 p.m. Both of these meetings will be open to the public.
