County Recycling Event Successful, Waiting on Permission to Collect Unused Pills Posted on December 29, 2012
Although unused paint and electronics items were collected at the latest county recycling event, unused prescription pills were not. According to Chief Deputy Tommy Chapman ,the Giles County Sheriff’s Department is awaiting federal permission before a permanent collection for unused pills can be set up here.
The department has collected pills at past recycling events at the Giles County Highway Department, which are coordinated with the Interlocal Solid Waste Authority, Giles County Solid Waste Authority and other groups. Because the program is being redone, however, permission is needed from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration before the pills can be collected for disposal.
The Nov. 10 collection day was coordinated between Julie Phillips of the Giles County Highway Department and Carol Fulmer of the Interlocal Solid Waste Authority. Holding it could help the county qualify for another full-fledged Household Hazardous Waste Collection event sponsored by the state Department of Environment and Conservation. Because the department hosted an HHW collection this spring, it could be another year before a similar event is held.
The event was limited mostly to electronics and paint, with more than 290 gallons of paint ultimately being collected. Dozens of people donated various househould electronics. Richland Elementary School did their part by collecting over 2,500 pounds of aluminum cans and plastic.
