Unit Two Shut Down At Browns Ferry Plant Posted on December 27, 2012
Unit 2 of Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant remained at reduced power today after an unplanned shutdown Saturday.
According to a report filed by Tennessee Valley Authority with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, there was an unexpected loss of power to two reactor protection systems.
“Reactor protection systems control a number of systems throughout the unit, and all systems affected by the loss of power responded as designed,” a TVA official said in a statement.
Unit 2 was operating at 19 percent of capacity this morning, according to NRC reports. Units 1 and 3 were at 100 percent power.
The shutdown was the most recent of many problems for the Limestone County nuclear plant, including an ongoing "red" finding that required the three units to undergo intensive NRC inspections.
