PFD Warns of Dangers Involving Fried Turkey
Posted on November 20, 2012

The menus are made, the shopping is done, the guest list is complete, now grab the fire extinguisher.

It may sound like a punch line following “Aunt Sally’s bad cooking jokes,” but in all seriousness, anyone who plans to deep fry a turkey for Thanksgiving should have a plan to deal with the “just in case” situation of an accidental fire.

PFD Chief Don Collins said those popular turkey fryers are also a recipe for fire -gallons of boiling oil, open propane gas fires and an unstable frame- can turn dinner into danger.

For those who have their mind set on deep fried foul, follow Collins’ suggestions:
• Do NOT deep fry a turkey inside ANY structure.
• Make sure the turkey is thoroughly defrosted before cooking to avoid a grease flash over.
• Make sure the fryer is on a flat and stable surface.
• Never place on a wooden deck, in a garage or within 10-feet of buildings or any other material that can burn.
• Never leave the fryer unattended.
• Do NOT overfill the fryer with cooking oil.
• Make sure to have a fire extinguisher close by, and know how to use it.

“Pulaski Fire Department wishes you all a happy -and safe- Thanksgiving.”
