Columbia House Fire Kills One and Injures One
Posted on November 16, 2012

A man died and a woman was injured in a house fire in Columbia early Friday morning.

When fire crews got on the scene around 1:20 a.m., the home on East 17th Street at Bailey Street was fully engulfed in flames.

Shortly before firefighters arrived, Columbia Police officers and two bystanders rescued a woman from the home by breaking out a back window. Firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly, but discovered a man's body inside the home.

"The firemen did a great job. For as much fire as we had on our arrival, they knocked it down real fast, and got in there and got to searching, and found the gentleman really fast, but it was just too late," Columbia Fire Assistant Chief Tim Holt.

Holt said he credits the officers with saving the woman's life.

The woman was taken Maury Regional Medical Center, then transferred to a hospital in Nashville. The woman received burns, but it was unclear how serious they were.

Fire investigators said the couple was using electric and kerosene heaters in their homes, but representatives from the State Fire Marshal's Office, the Columbia Fire Marshal's office and detectives with the Columbia Police Department were on scene to determine the cause of the fire.
