Posted on August 09, 2012

Investigators believe they have identified the person killed in
Summertown on Tuesday night after his car struck a large gas line transmission station. Reports are circulating that the man was Arthur Wayne Spence who was 29 years old and lived in Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Spence was a computer technician who had been on a service call in the Summertown area. The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on Highway 20 at Monument Road in Summertown. Mr. Spence was eastbound on Highway
20 when he lost control of his Nissan Sentra, left the roadway and crashed
into a natural gas line. The vehicle struck a valve station where Lawrenceburg Utilities takes their gas off of a main feeder line. The accident set off a fire and flames shooting flames up to 70 feet in
the air. Crews contained the fire to 50 foot by 50-foot area.
Officials said the gas company was called to the scene to shut down the
main line and secondary lines to any homes affected. Gas lines were restored early Wednesday morning. More than 150 area residents were displaced for several hours.
