One Killed In Summertown Gas Explosion Posted on August 08, 2012
One person was killed when a gas line exploded just outside of Summertown
on State Highway 20 around 6:20 Tuesday night.
Sheriff Jimmy Brown said a vehicle went off the roadway and crashed into a
natural gas transmission station near the monument, just west of highway
43.
Officials said that crews from the local and regional gas company were
called to the scene to shut down the line. The first valve of the line was
cut off around 8:30.
Crews were forced to evacuate 75-100 homes within a three mile area around
the gas explosion. About 200 people were affected, according to Sheriff
Brown.
Officials from the Tennessee Highway Patrol were called to the scene to
assist crews from several local fire departments. Crews from the Maury
County Hazmat team were called to the scene. TEMA was also assisting in
the operation. As of last night, the idenity of the victim had not been
determined.
