WKSR:
Elkton Relaxes Sunday Beer Sale Law
Posted on June 28, 2009

The Elkton Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted recently to extend the hours of beer sales in the city. The board voted 4-1 on a city ordinance that states on-premises beer can be sold from noon on Sundays to 1 a.m. Mondays. Mayor Bill Ware says what it amounts to is that bars are now open on Sunday.

According to an article in the Pulaski Citizen newspaper, taverns in the Elkton city limits had been required to close from 2 a.m. Sundays to 1 a.m. Mondays. Other than on Superbowl Sundays, which one administration had given permission to open, closing on Sundays for local taverns had been that way since the 1980s.

Alderman Doug Turner stated that he didn’t think the city had any choice in the matter during a discussion of the matter. “It’s either this or raise property taxes, and I don’t want to raise the taxes,” Turner told the gathering.

It is hoped that extending beer sales will increase some of the city’s income.
