Law Lecture Coming Up April 2nd At MMC
Posted on March 26, 2009

The Hon. Julia Smith Gibbons, a resident of Memphis, Tenn., will be the guest speaker for the third annual Chief Justice Joe W. Henry Law Lecture. The event is to be held at 7pm Thursday, April 2, in Martin Hall Auditorium. Gibbons serves as judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, a position she has held since 2002.

Gibbons earned her undergraduate degree magna cum laude at Vanderbilt University in 1972 and then her law degree at the University of Virginia three years later. Her first job after passing the bar exam was, ironically, as a law clerk for a member of the U.S. Court Appeals for the Sixth Circuit – the very court she would be appointed to 27 years later.
The annual lecture series is named in memory of Joe W. Henry, a Giles County attorney who served on the Tennessee Supreme Court from 1974 until his death in 1980, including serving as Chief Justice from Dec. 1, 1977, until June 30, 1979.
