Motorcycle Awareness Month Posted on May 13, 2008
May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The Tennessee Department of Safety, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Governor’s Highway Safety Office and the Motorcycle Awareness Foundation of Tennessee encourage motorcycle riders and drivers to “Share the Road”.
Department of Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell says the number of motorcycle fatalities in Tennessee has more than doubled in the last 7 years. “We want all riders and drivers to share the road and help reduce that trend.” The number of motorcycle fatalities in Tennessee jumped from 42 in 1998 to 148 in 2007.
“This steady increase over the past decade represents one of our greatest highway safety challenges,” said Governor’s Highway Safety Office Director Kendell Poole. “When you consider that one out of every nine deadly crashes last year involved a motorcycle rider, it is clear that drivers need to be extra cautious.”
Motorcyclists must follow the rules of the road and always wear protective gear. Tennessee law requires all motorcycle drivers and passengers to wear approved helmets and protective eyewear.
